Riding a skateboard for most of my life, I became a fan of Michael Leon since his early days working with the Girl Skateboard's family. I was always drawn to his graphic style. Simple. Smart. Unique. Once he left to start Rasa Libre, his work really took off. I've followed his work with Nike, and his own clothing line, Commonwealth Stacks, which is making a much needed come back. With the launch of his new site, it's great to see the spectrum of all he has created. Enjoy.

Soiree de Poche

I poached this from Kitsune Noir. I was already a huge fan of La Blogotheque, and the Take Away Shows. In particular, Beirut, Man Man, Alan Sparhawk and Arcade Fire to name a few. The new project is called Soiree de Poche and is more like a small concert in your home. I really liked the tone and feel of each video, from the editing to the camera position and angles. It changed per artist, and was based on the mood and feel of the show. Also check out Andrew Bird's performance as well.

Brooklyn Zoo

Just got back from visiting my brother in New York. Brooklyn is pretty amazing, reminds me of San Francisco a bit. There is a really great art, music and food scene going on there right now. Walking outside my brothers apartment, I found a goldmine of great textures and colors to capture.
Besides taking photos, I ate a ton of great food. With my brother being a chef, he knew all the good places to go. Whether it was pizza in Harlem, or a falafel sandwich in the city, we had great food everywhere we went. Thanks bro!

WOW! What a great ALDS. In impressive fashion, the Angels not only swept the Red Sox's, but they won game 3 by scoring 3 runs in the 9th of the hated Jonathan Papelbon. The great thing about the Angels this year is that everyone is contributing, from Abreu, to Hunter, to Aybar, even Vlad came up huge. The Angels have a lot of momentum going into the ALCS, but the Yankees aren't the same team they have faced in years past. No doubt this is going to be an epic series. My prediction, Angels in 7.

2009 Postseason

The 2009 Postseason is upon us, and the Los Angeles Angels are up against the hated Red Sox's for the second year in a row. Last year didn't turn out how they would have wanted, but I have a feeling this year may be different. This year the Halos seem to be playing with added purpose and a balance that they haven't had in years. There is a patients to the hitters, an influence of veteran Bobby Abreu. There really is no excuse to not get it done this year, even against a good team like the Sox's.

Iconoclasts

I've been a huge fan of the Iconoclasts series on Sundance since it came out in 2005. You can't beat moments like, Mario Batali cooking vegan food for Michael Stipe and his friends, Tom Ford stopping by Jeff Koons studio to ask if he was full of shit, Eddie Vedder going surfing with Laird Hamilton in Hawaii, Sean Penn retracing the steps of Christopher McCandless last days with Into the Wild author Jon Krakauer, and the list goes on and on. Season 4 came out last year, and hopefully we will see a Season 5 some time in the next year or so.

The Fantastic Mr. Fox

Being that Wes Anderson is one of, if not my favorite directors, I was excited to finally see some photos, and then a trailer for his new movie, The Fantastic Mr. Fox. The movie is based on the book by Ronald Dahl, and uses stop motion animation, similar to what he did on The Life Aquatic. It looks simply amazing, and the dialog is pure Wes. You can also expect to hear some familiar voices, as he teams up with many actors he's worked with in his past films. Please take a look.

I'm kind of on an art binge right now. Just trying to catch up on some of my favorites, and hopefully expose someone else to something new.

Faile came threw with a new site recently with tons of amazing stuff to look at. There recent show in London is worth looking at. The prayer wheels are unbelievable. I've seen others try and duplicate, but none come close. Epic.

I'm not sure when the first time I saw Sylvia's work, but I remember being struck by how amazing it was. Her latest work blend's her love for Mexican Folk art, with her affinity for beautiful women. My girlfriend and I were able to catch her last show at Corey Helford Gallery in LA and it blew us away.

There's Aliens In Our Midst

I've been a big fan of AJ's work for many years. It have evolved into the most beautiful wood sculptures and masks that are unbelievable. His colors and patterns are always bright and vibrant, and the craftsmanship is top notch. If I only had $5,000, the giant bear would be mine.

He has a quick interview over at Fecal Face.

Also, his new show "There's Aliens In Our Midst" opens at White Walls in SF on June 13th. If you are in the area, please check it out.

Ferrofluid

Ferrofluid is a liquid which becomes strongly polarised in the presence of a magnetic field. This is stuff is pretty amazing. It appears as a dark black liquid until magnetized, where the liquid forms rigid shapes that can be manipulated.
Some everyday uses for this liquid are car suspension, RAM paint for the Air Force, Medicine and heat transfer technology.

Where The Wild Things Are

Probably my favorite book growing up. I loved everything about this book by Maurice Sendak. I heard about this movie being made a few years ago, with Spike Jones directing. Not only is Spike one of my favorite directors, but he is also part owner of Girl Skateboards. There has been many delays, among rumors of re-shoots and creative differences with the studio. Finally the movie is done, and done the way Spike wanted. The movie looks amazing. There is nothing more to say, just have a look and see for your self. I haven't been this excited to see a movie in years.

I have really been feeling this record since it came out. I love The Black Keys, so when when I heard that Dan Auerbach had a solo record coming out, I knew it would be good.
The song is called I Want Some More, from his debut album "KEEP IT HID". You can expect some of the same influences as The Black Keys, along with some bluegrass, country and R&B mixed in. Pick it up here.

I noticed Will's work on a few sites lately, so I thought I would create a post and join the club. Pretty amazing use of light in his photos. Probably even more amazing is that he is 17 and has only been taking photos for about a year and a half. Everything just seems so natural and unforced unlike a lot of new photography. Top 10 15 Albums of 2008

Here is a list of my top 15 albums of 2008. There was alot of great music that came out in 2008. I discovered some new bands like Department of Eagles, Fleet Foxes, The Dodos and The Builders and The Butchers. This was also a year of side projects. Retribution Gospel Choir is a side project of Alan Sparhawk of Low. Megapuss is a collaboration between Devendra Banhart and Greg Rogove of Priestbird. Last is my top album of 2008, Department of Eagles, which is a off shoot of Grizzly Bear front man Daniel Rossen and his NYU roommates. There was also great new releases by some old favorites, TV on the Radio, Cat Power, The Black Keys and Wolf Parade to name a few. Anyways, hope you enjoy.

MAP OF THE INNER WAR

I checked out Ed Templeton's new show at the Roberts and Tilton gallery in Culver City. The show is really great, a good mixture of his paintings and photos. I was really impressed by the wood sculptures with the metal word snakes coming from there mouths. It seems like Ed is putting more and more detail into his work and has really developed his painting style. Most of his photos had extra artistic elements added to gave them a unique touch.

Also showing at the gallery in the project room was Matt Leines. His work is an awesome mix of WWF, greek mythology, Celtic patterns and He-Man. He uses amazing line work, colors and patterns to present his unique world.

This is the first time I am truly excited about our next president. What can I say, the guy is a badass. I could care less if he is a guy I would like to have a beer with or not, I want our president to be someone who is ten times smarter than me, level headed, open minded, and ready to make some changes. Not sure why people want a president to be someone like them? This is the highest job in the land, not captain of the bowling team. I feel good things are on the horizon. Can't wait until January 20th.

Oh Comely

In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, is one of the those albums I never get sick of. It might take a few listens to really get into it, but most great albums are like that for me. Oh Comely is an eight minute masterpiece, my favorite on the album. Lyrics about "flesh licking ladies", "sister and mother and 500 families", "powerful pistons", "sugary sweet machines", "green fleshy flowers", and "some sort of time machine". Written and sung by the amazing Jeff Mangum, and arranged in a fuzzy, lo-fi, old-timey blend of dream-like imagery that is consistent throughout the record. This is a must have record in anyone's collection.

Beautiful Inside My Head Forever

Interesting article on Damien Hirst, and the two day Sotheby's auction held earlier this week. This was the first time an artist of his status bypassed the galleries and sold his work directly at auction. Two years worth of work, about 223 pieces total. Most of the works were what you come to expect from him, animals floating in formaldehyde, dot patterns, butterfly-covered canvas, spin-art, diamonds, skulls, etc... Not sure how I feel about his work, seems a little over-hyped. At some point you get so big, you have to keep topping yourself to feel successful. It becomes less about progressing or trying new things, and more about beating a record or making the most money. I guess being the richest living artist affords him the luxury not to care what anyone has to say.

American League West Champions

After there 4-2 victory over the Yankees, and the Mariners taking care of business in Texas, the Angels clinched the division and secured themselves a playoff spot. This has probably been one of the funnest years to be an Angel fan since 2002. The team is great from top to bottom and they all seem like good, solid dudes. Check out Tori Hunter, the guys is a great hitter, a great fielder, and a great guy. He is always laughing and having a good time, keeping everyone loose in the clubhouse. That being said, there is still 17 games left, and the next goal is to keep winning and finish with the best record in the American League. More pictures of the celebration.

John Stewart for President!

I got to give credit to Bend Press for posting this link. John Stewart is amazing at pointing out how full of shit some politicians and members of the media are. It's funny how the last few elections have turned into the presidential equivalent of American Idol. Each candidates policies get lost, and each becomes a caricature of them selves. I guess it is encouraging that so many people watched each parties convention, but what did it change? I still feel the same way about both candidates and my vote hasn't changed.
